Test report for single event effects of the 80386DX microprocessor
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory Section 514 Single Event Effects (SEE) Testing and Analysis Group has performed a series of SEE tests of certain strategic registers of Intel's 80386DX CHMOS 4 microprocessor. Following a summary of the test techniques and hardware used to gather the data, we present the SEE heavy ion and proton test results. We also describe the registers tested, along with a system impact analysis should these registers experience a single event upset
Lack of Effect of Induction of Hypothermia after Acute Brain Injury
Background
Induction of hypothermia in patients with brain injury was shown to improve outcomes in small clinical studies, but the results were not definitive. To study this issue, we conducted a multicenter trial comparing the effects of hypothermia with those of normothermia in patients with acute brain injury.
Methods
The study subjects were 392 patients 16 to 65 years of age with coma after sustaining closed head injuries who were randomly assigned to be treated with hypothermia (body temperature, 33°C), which was initiated within 6 hours after injury and maintained for 48 hours by means of surface cooling, or normothermia. All patients otherwise received standard treatment. The primary outcome measure was functional status six months after the injury.
Results
The mean age of the patients and the type and severity of injury in the two treatment groups were similar. The mean (±SD) time from injury to randomization was 4.3±1.1 hours in the hypothermia group and 4.1±1.2 hours in the normothermia group, and the mean time from injury to the achievement of the target temperature of 33°C in the hypothermia group was 8.4±3.0 hours. The outcome was poor (defined as severe disability, a vegetative state, or death) in 57 percent of the patients in both groups. Mortality was 28 percent in the hypothermia group and 27 percent in the normothermia group (P=0.79). The patients in the hypothermia group had more hospital days with complications than the patients in the normothermia group. Fewer patients in the hypothermia group had high intracranial pressure than in the normothermia group.
Conclusions
Treatment with hypothermia, with the body temperature reaching 33°C within eight hours after injury, is not effective in improving outcomes in patients with severe brain injury. (N Engl J Med 2001; 344:556-63.
Lynx X-Ray Observatory: An Overview
Lynx, one of the four strategic mission concepts under study for the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey, provides leaps in capability over previous and planned x-ray missions and provides synergistic observations in the 2030s to a multitude of space- and ground-based observatories across all wavelengths. Lynx provides orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity, on-axis subarcsecond imaging with arcsecond angular resolution over a large field of view, and high-resolution spectroscopy for point-like and extended sources in the 0.2- to 10-keV range. The Lynx architecture enables a broad range of unique and compelling science to be carried out mainly through a General Observer Program. This program is envisioned to include detecting the very first seed black holes, revealing the high-energy drivers of galaxy formation and evolution, and characterizing the mechanisms that govern stellar evolution and stellar ecosystems. The Lynx optics and science instruments are carefully designed to optimize the science capability and, when combined, form an exciting architecture that utilizes relatively mature technologies for a cost that is compatible with the projected NASA Astrophysics budget
Duality in Non-Trivially Compactified Heterotic Strings
We study the implications of duality symmetry on the analyticity properties
of the partition function as it depends upon the compactification length. In
order to obtain non-trivial compactifications, we give a physical prescription
to get the Helmholtz free energy for any heterotic string supersymmetric or
not. After proving that the free energy is always invariant under the duality
transformation and getting the zero temperature
theory whose partition function corresponds to the Helmholtz potential, we show
that the self-dual point is a generic singularity
as the Hagedorn one. The main difference between these two critical
compactification radii is that the term producing the singularity at the
self-dual point is finite for any . We see that this behavior at
actually implies a loss of degrees of freedom below that point.Comment: (Preprint No. FTUAM-92/12) 17 page
Unsuitability of the moving light clock system for the Lorentz factor derivation
The moving light clock system was analyzed with respect to the orientation of
the wavefront of the light pulse observed in the moving and stationary frames
of reference. The plane wavefront of the light pulse was oriented horizontally
in both the frames. The wavefront observed in the stationary frame was not
perpendicular to the direction of the light pulse propagation. This showed
different characteristics of the light pulse than that assumed in the Lorentz
factor derivation. According to the horizontal orientation of the wavefront,
velocity c was determined as the vertical component of the light pulse motion
observed in the stationary frame. Application of this velocity distribution in
the Lorentz factor derivation showed the same travel time for the light pulse
observed in the moving and stationary frames of reference. The moving light
clock system was therefore found to be unsuitable for the Lorentz factor
derivation and illustration of time dilation, and shown to illustrate the
relativity of the observation of light rather than the relativity of time.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Effect of preoperative thoracic duct drainage on canine kidney transplantation
Chronic drainage of the thoracic duct to the esophagus was developed in dogs, and its efficacy in immunomodulation was tested using kidney transplantation. Compared to 9.7 days in the control, the mean animal survival was prolonged to 9.9 days, 17.8 days, and 18.5 days when TDD was applied preoperatively for 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 9 weeks, respectively. Prolongation was significant after 6 weeks. Patency of the fistula was 93.5, 80.4, and 76.1% at respective weeks. Number of peripheral T-lymphocytes determined by a new monoclonal antibody diminished after 3 weeks. All animals were in normal health, requiring no special care for fluid, electrolyte, or protein replacement
